This week, we're highlighting Rob's sweet story: "I was scrolling through pictures and found this gem. My 17-year-old Elliott and I asleep on the couch after playing Roller Coaster Tycoon.
Elliott happens to be autistic and the only reason I remember what game it was is because Elliott had this thing where he always held on to the game cases while we played a video game.
He apparently stashed this one on the back of the couch this time before he fell asleep.
I remember when he was this tiny. I miss when he was this tiny.
Time goes by so quickly. When you’re raising neurodivergent kids, it’s so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day autism struggles.
As parents we’re tired, overwhelmed, frustrated, and stressed.
Did I say tired? I should have said exhausted.
So many of us live in survival mode, just trying to make it through the day.
When you’re just trying to make it through the day, it’s harder to remember to take advantage of all the little moments—like this—that bring you joy.
Trust me when I say that being present and living in these moments as often as you can is so important because before you know it, they turn 17, have a full beard, and are getting ready to begin building a life of their own.
It’s bittersweet really, because life has been full of so many challenges but he’s come so far and brings such an amazing light to the world.
I’m so honored to be his dad and couldn’t be any prouder of the young man he’s becoming.
While I miss these moments when he was little, I cherish the ones we have now and look forward to the countless ones we’ve yet to experience."
